REACH Regulation & Restricted Dyes: A Sock Material Sourcing Guide to Avoid Chemical Non-Compliance

1. REACH: The EU's Most Comprehensive Chemical Regulation

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is the European Union's foundational chemical safety regulation. Unlike product-specific rules, REACH applies to all chemicals used in industrial processes and consumer products — including every dye, pigment, finishing agent, and accessory material in a pair of socks.

For sock manufacturers and exporters shipping to the EU, REACH compliance is not optional. Non-compliant products can be refused entry at EU borders, recalled from the market, and result in fines under national REACH enforcement laws. At Zhuji Coobird Socks Factory, our OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification ensures that all materials and processes meet REACH restricted substance limits, and we provide full material compliance documentation for every EU-bound order.

2. REACH Restricted Dyes and Chemicals for Textiles

2.1 AZO Dyes (the Most Critical Category for Socks)

REACH Annex XVII Entry 43 bans AZO dyes that can release one or more of 22 prohibited aromatic amines in concentrations above 30 mg/kg (0.003%) in finished textile products.

The 22 prohibited amines include:

· 4-Aminodiphenyl (CAS 92-67-1)

· Benzidine (CAS 92-87-5)

· 4-Chloro-o-toluidine (CAS 95-69-2)

· 2-Naphthylamine (CAS 91-59-8)

· o-Aminoazotoluene (CAS 97-56-3)

· 5-Nitro-o-toluidine (CAS 99-55-8)

· 4,4'-Methylenedianiline (CAS 101-77-9)

· 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine (CAS 91-94-1)

· 3,3'-Dimethoxybenzidine (CAS 119-90-4)

· 3,3'-Dimethylbenzidine (CAS 119-93-7)

· 4,4'-Methylene-bis-(2-chloroaniline) (CAS 101-14-4)

· 4,4'-Oxydianiline (CAS 101-80-4)

· 4,4'-Thiodianiline (CAS 139-65-1)

· 2-Methoxy-5-methylaniline (CAS 120-71-8)

· 2-Aminophenol (CAS 95-55-6)

· 4-Aminoazobenzene (CAS 60-09-3)

· 2,4,5-Trimethylaniline (CAS 137-17-7)

· 2,4,5-Trimethylaniline (alternative)

· o-Toluidine (CAS 95-53-4)

· 4-Methyl-m-phenylenediamine (CAS 95-80-7)

· 2,4-Diaminoanisole (CAS 615-05-4)

· 2,2'-Bis(4-aminophenyl)propane (CAS 7790-95-6)

Why this matters for socks: AZO dyes are widely used in textile dyeing because they are cheap and produce vibrant colors. Dark colors (black, navy, deep red, brown) are the highest risk because they require more dye. Every dyed yarn, printed label, and heat transfer design in your socks must be AZO-free.

Testing method: EN 14362-1:2012 (textiles — methods for determination of certain aromatic amines derived from AZO colorants).

2.2 Disperse Dyes (Allergy Risk)

REACH restricts certain disperse dyes known to cause skin sensitization and allergic reactions. These are primarily used in synthetic fiber dyeing (polyester, nylon) — extremely common in sports socks.

Key restricted disperse dyes include:

· Disperse Blue 1 (CAS 2475-44-7)

· Disperse Blue 3 (CAS 2475-46-9)

· Disperse Blue 106 (CAS 12222-97-8)

· Disperse Blue 124 (CAS 61951-51-7)

· Disperse Orange 3 (CAS 730-40-5)

· Disperse Orange 37/76

· Disperse Red 1 (CAS 2872-52-8)

· Disperse Red 17 (CAS 3179-89-3)

· Disperse Yellow 3 (CAS 2832-40-8)

· Disperse Yellow 49

Limit: Each restricted disperse dye must not exceed 0.1% by weight in the finished textile article.

Why this matters for sports socks: Most athletic socks use polyester or nylon blends for moisture-wicking and durability. These fibers are dyed with disperse dyes. If your supplier uses restricted disperse dyes, the socks can cause skin rashes and allergic reactions — a major liability in the EU market.

2.3 Other REACH Restricted Substances Relevant to Socks

Substance Category

3. SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) — The 0.1% Threshold

Beyond the Annex XVII restricted list, REACH maintains the SVHC Candidate List — substances of very high concern (carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxins, persistent bioaccumulative toxins). As of 2026, the list contains over 240 substances.

If any SVHC is present in a product above 0.1% by weight, the supplier must:

1. Communicate this information to recipients in the supply chain (within 45 days of request)

2. Notify the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) if the substance is present in articles above 1 tonne/year per manufacturer/importer

3. For consumer products, provide information about the SVHC presence to consumers upon request

For socks, common SVHC risks include certain dyes, plasticizers, and flame retardants. Regular SVHC screening of materials is essential.

4. Material Sourcing Best Practices to Avoid Chemical Non-Compliance

4.1 Yarn Sourcing

· Require AZO-free dyeing certificates from every yarn supplier

· Specify disperse dye restrictions for polyester/nylon yarns

· Request REACH compliance declarations with each yarn batch

· Prioritize OEKO-TEX certified yarns — these have already been screened for REACH substances

· Avoid unknown or "no-name" dyeing houses — they are the most likely to use banned AZO dyes to cut costs

4.2 Dye and Chemical Management

· Maintain an approved chemical list (positive list) that excludes all REACH restricted substances

· Require Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for every dye and chemical used in production

· Conduct periodic wastewater testing to verify that restricted chemicals are not being used

· Use low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes for cotton — these are inherently AZO-free and have excellent colorfastness

4.3 Accessory and Packaging Sourcing

· Avoid PVC entirely — use PU, TPU, or paper alternatives

· Require nickel-free metal accessories (if any metal is used)

· Use formaldehyde-free packaging adhesives

· Avoid DMFu-containing desiccants in packaging

5. The Coobird REACH Compliance System

· OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified: Every material and process is screened against a list of over 100 harmful substances, including all REACH restricted dyes and chemicals

· Approved chemical positive list: We maintain a strict list of approved dyes and chemicals; no REACH-restricted substance enters our production

· Yarn supplier audit program: All yarn suppliers must provide AZO-free certificates and REACH compliance declarations; we audit them annually

· Batch testing: Random batch testing for AZO dyes, disperse dyes, heavy metals, and formaldehyde

· Full documentation: REACH compliance declaration, material safety data sheets, and third-party test reports provided with every EU order

· BSCI certified: Ethical and environmental production standards
